The “Redefined” Lesson Plan has the same goal as the original lesson plan. Yet, it accomplishes the goal in a more effective, efficient, and on a deeper level by allowing students the opportunity to interact with the content, perform research based on student interest, allows students the flexibility for assessment based on their own strengths. Additionally, technological elements of the lesson give way to significant student collaboration.
Firstly, students are not presented the information in a traditional lecture format. They are given all the information at once, in the form of a concept map. This makes students feel as if they get to explore the content on their own terms. If I did this assignment again, I would perhaps think more carefully about the concept map and how it is arranged in order to include many different sources of information. The map includes written information and definitions, as well as videos, images, and ways to connect the information from one concept to the next. This is something that was not accomplished using the original format of the lesson plan.
Second, students use the Internet and digital interfaces to perform their own research. This allows students access to a greater depth of information, as well as the opportunity for creativity. Giving students a choice in their project and having them be the expert also gives individuals a chance to take ownership of the information and to learn leadership/teaching skills. All of this gets students to deepen their understanding and engagement with the material.
The flexibility for assessment is something that technology can make a huge different for students. Since the format of their small group projects is open ended, they are able to find a way of learning that works for them and engage in the creative process. This also removes barriers for students who make have learning differences in the classroom.
Lastly, I believe the collaboration element of this lesson gives students a final project that brings them together. This project not only connects them to the place that they live, but also connects them to their community. Since all of the elements of this lesson are digital, they are able to share with a larger community such as the rest of the school, or the local weather channel. Engaging students together in content that is relevant allows them to feel ownership over the content, and gain a better understanding of why the content is important.
